Warm in the Cold

Today is the first day of the Warm in the Cold art exhibit at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio that I was a co-convenor with Margaret Tough.

Cindy Allan put two paintings into the show. The first one called "Steve's Paradise" is of a barn in winter and at the end of the first wall when entering the Gallery.

Her second painting is "Waiting for Winter" of a snow bound canoe by birch trees. This is found on the main wall at the end of the Gallery.

I have three small paintings in the show over the desk on the side wall.

The show runs from 30 Nov - 18 Dec 16 and closes for the Christmas holidays and reopens in the New Year and continues from 04-15 Jan 17.

The Opening Reception is on 04 Dec 16 from 1-4pm.I hope that some of you are able to come out and see the show.

Roland's Steak House

Recently the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group were given the opportunity to hang their artwork in Roland's Steak House at 845 Highway 7 East, Peterborough, Ontario.

Earlier this month Vera Penrose and I went to look at the space at Roland's where our paintings would hang.

The first area we were shown was a 12-1/2' (3.8m) wall in the hallway leading to the dining rooms.  I thought on that wall we could probably hang eight to ten paintings depending on their size.

Next we were shown the Club Room which is fairly large 20' x 30' (6m x 9m) with plenty of space for paintings.

On the wall to the right of the first door, I thought on the first section before the fireplace could hold two to four paintings and on the other section of the wall from the fire place to the corner could have two to three paintings.

Next came the long wall with two windows and to complicate things even more, in the centre of each of the three sections of the wall there was a light fixture.

I felt those walls would be able to have between six to nine paintings in total.

Then came the long wall with next to no interruptions with the exception of two light fixtures.

I felt that wall could easily take at least seven paintings or more, depending on the size of the paintings.

The last long wall was again broken up much like the wall on the opposite side of the room; but in this case there were two doors, a china cabinet as well as two light fixtures.

On the first section of wall, we could either put in one large painting or three smaller paintings of various sizes.

On the one side of the china cabinet I thought we could probably put up three paintings and on the other side only two paintings would probably work well.

Today Cindy Allan, Norma MacEachern and I hung our paintings together with those of Vera Penrose who was unable to be there with us.

We knew it was going to take a while to hang the area in the hallway and in the Club Room as there were no hooks on the walls to hang paintings and we would have to put in all of them.

The advantage to this is that in the future it is set up and the hooks would remain and not be moved.

Once we set out all of the paintings, we chose the larger pieces first and set them on the floor where they would hang in the rooms and from there each of us took a wall and hung paintingss.

Once we had all the paintings up, we did switch a few of them around to make things look more balanced.

The final result was pleasing and the owners were completely happy with how all the paintings enhanced the room.
