6th Annual Art @ the Locks Show

Once again all four members of the Countryside Art Group came out for the 6th Annual Art @ the Locks Art Show sponsored by Lockside Trading Company.

Diane Collins took her spot on the veranda facing up from Lock 27 toward Clear Lake.

For most of the day her display was in the shade which was a benefit with the high heat and even higher humidity.

Cindy Allan had her display on the veranda facing the lock, as well as having a number of her paintings hanging on both sides of the fence which brought in many of the people from the boats going through the lock.

Cindy spent the weekend working on a large mixed media painting of birch trees. This caused a considerable amount of interest as our visitors stopped to watch her work and ask a variety of questions.

Norma MacEachern and I shared the tent which was placed between Diane and Cindy, on the lawn by the gate leading down to the walkway running along side of Lock 31.

My paintings were displayed on the long table and short grids on the left side of the tent and with the sun coming around the large watercolour painting on the easel had to be moved to the back of the tent to keep it out of the direct sunlight.

Some of Norma's paintings were displayed on the short grids at the end of the long table and the remaining paintings were on the small table on the right side of the tent.

I set up my chair beside the small table and spent the weekend working on a number of smaller paintings.

It was an enjoyable weekend and we look forward to returning next year.

Peterborough Garden Tour

Today Cindy Allan, Norma MacEachern and Susan Sydney set up a display of floral and still life paintings featuring flowers at Griffins's Greenhouse and Garden Centre located at at 3026 Lakefield Rd., Lakefield, Ontario as part of the Peterborough Garden Tour.

Griffin's was listed as Garden #8 on the Garden Tour and featured a delightful display garden that was designed and planted in 2000.

Since then, each year brings new additions to delight the many visitors who visit the garden to buy plants, or have wedding photographs taken, spend time plein aire painting the stunning displays of plants and flowers, or to simply sit and enjoy the beauty of the gardens on the many benches and setting available throughout the grounds including a cedar gazebo.

The first thing you saw as you approached our display area was a painting of water lilies by Norma which was at the side of the roadway leading to the back of the garden centre.

Across from that was a tent set up, where most of our paintings were displayed on easels, tables and grids.

Many of the paintings were displayed among baskets of potted plants and flowers which added to the beauty of the exhibit.

Just across the lawn on the other side of the gazebo was a group of Highland dancers who performed throughout the day, which also attracted many people.

During the afternoon Susan worked on a number of small watercolour paintings of the various plants and flowers around the gazebo, while Cindy sketched some of the many plants located by the large natural pond.

In the late afternoon shortly before we were going to take down the exhibit, we had an unexpected visitor; a painted turtle who came out from the marsh, walked across the road and came into the tent to visit and enjoy our art show.

It seemed as though he particularly like one of the paintings by Cindy, who also watches over a number of different kinds of turtles who lay their eggs in the sand by the waterfront on her property.

When he turned to cross the road again, Cindy picked him up and set him in the pond so he wouldn't get run over by a passing vehicle.
