Elements of Nature Art Show

Today is the first day of the Outdoor Painters' Group show, Elements of Nature held at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio

The opening is on Sunday 15 November 15 from 1:00p.m.to 4:00p.m. where you can meet many of the artists whose work is on display.

The show features the art of nineteen members of the Group, a Silent Auction of original art, with a minimum of 25% of the purchase price going towards prizes for the Best of High School Art Show held in May each year at the Gallery.

As well as seventeen 8" x 10" paintings available at $30.00 each from the Small Treasures Art Show which was a fund raiser for the B.H.S.A. Show with 100% of the purchase price going for prizes for the students.

With the four members of the Countryside Art Group also being Outdoor Painters, all of us are exhibiting in this show.

As you enter the Gallery along the first wall you will find the art of Cindy Allan.

This year she has been working on much larger canvases and is displaying two recently completed oil paintings.

The top painting is is of a calm, peaceful, late summer afternoon on the lake.

The bottom painting features one of the canoes for which Cindy is well known; this one in green and looks as though it is waiting to be taken out on the calm waters of the lake.

Cindy Allan

Norma MacEacheren's paintings are further along the same wall as Cindy's artwork. When she retired she started painting in oils and less than a year ago in the fall she started painting in watercolour.

She has taken classes with a number of watercolour artists as she continues to develop a unique style all her own as she works with this medium which she is mastering quite well.

She paints a wide variety of subject matter ranging from floral, landscape, buildings and animals.

Recently Norma has started doing some fantasy artwork featuring fairies and toadstools.

The top painting is of one of the many local family farms which are reminiscent of her childhood home on a large working farm north of Burleigh Falls.

The lower painting features the delicate beauty of a water lily in full bloom highlighted against the calm, dark water of the lake.

Norma Macheren

On the far back wall of the Gallery just around the corner from Norma's artwork is a lovely exhibit by Diane Collins.

Her display features two watercolour paintings and a small autumn landscape in acrylic. Diane works equally well in both media.

The first watercolour painting is a floral still life of Black-Eyed Susans in a copper vase. Beside it is  a riot of autumn coloured leaves spread across the ground like a carpet.

Below the second watercolour is an acrylic painting of a forest of maple trees at the height of the autumn season.

Mary Diane Collins

Directly across the Gallery in the opposite corner from the paintings of Norma and Diane is the artwork of Susan Sydney.

She chose to display a collection of watercolour paintings featuring different times of day from the beauty of a sunrise on reflected in calm water, the silhouette of trees against a sunset or the beauty of the northern lights over a lake.

The remaining watercolour paintings show the glory of autumn with the brilliant hues of the changing leaves and the beauty of the Canadian winter.

Susan Sydney

On the table are a collection of her ACEO in a wide variety of subject matter contained in two binders.

We hope you are able to come out and enjoy the exhibit before it closes at 4:00p.m. on Sunday 29 November 15.

Peterborough Public Library Display Case

Today Norman, Cindy and I went to the Peterborough Public Library at 345 Aylmer St. N. in Peterborough, Ontario to set up an arrangement of art supplies, paintings and posters in the main display case by the main entrance to promote the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.

With having had a meeting last month about how we would set up the display it didn't take long to bring in everything we needed.

The display case is 120' (936.6m) long and 4' (1.2m) wide. We rearranged the shelves first and then set up the two largest paintings and the KAGS banner.

From there we started working from the right side of the case to the left, beginning at the bottom.

We put one of Norma's oil paintings toward the back and placed a couple of canvases in front of it, then her paint box beside them followed by my wooden case of Prisma pencils with a couple of water colour sketches and a small block of watercolour paper.

To complete the right side we added a small painting to the shelf, a container with a set of small watercolour brushes, bottles of varnish and paint thinners, a couple of tins with watercolour pencils, a wooden box with various sponges, rulers, pencils and other basic tools.

Lastly we added the poster for the upcoming Elements of Nature Art Show which opens this Sunday 15 November 2015.

Now it was time to complete the left side of the display.

We started by putting two posters with information about KAGS, its beginnings and what its mandate is, complete with a map and all the ways of contacting us.

On the bottom shelf we continued with more art supplies and paintings including another container of brushes, a painter's apron and a water bowl; followed by my wooden case of pastels with pen and ink supplies and some scratch board tools on the lid.

This was finished with a couple of blank canvases and a small painting on an easel.

On the shelf we set up two easels one with a partially completed watercolour painting and the other with a small oil painting. Next to this was another collection of brushes, more little boxes of pastels, drafting tools, and a couple of metal boxes of water soluble pencils and a photograph on stretched canvas.

Lastly we scattered a few small arrangements of silk autumn leaves throughout the display and tossed some individual leaves randomly among the art supplies.

The total time to set up the display took us just over an hour and next week when we return to take the display down it will probably take about half that amount of time.

5th Annual Purple Onion Festival

This year we enjoyed a warm, bright and sunny day for the 5th Annual Purple Onion Festival held in Millennium Park in Peterborough, Ontario.

There was only a gentle breeze blowing which allowed us to keep both doors open at the ends of the building is year.

Once again we were in the space beside the Silver Bean Cafe which worked extremely well for us this year as it did last.

It didn't take us very long to get the show set up and ready for the opening; we kept it pretty much the same as last year.

By having the tables around the side walls and a row down through the center of the building it created an open and inviting space allowing people to go through the entire display without missing anything.

Cindy and Norma had their artwork down the one side wall and on easels at the front and back of the building.

Susan had her artwork on the center panels facing Cindy and Norma's artwork and had a space at the far end on the opposite side wall for a drafting board so she could demonstrate watercolour painting during the course of the show.

Diane had her work on the center panel facing the other wall which also held more of her artwork and a variety of art cards and gift items.

The crowds were larger than last year and we had a steady stream of people going through the show and some returned more than once during the course of the day to look at a favourite painting.

It was an enjoyable show with lots of live entertainment and each of were able to go around and view all the other exhibits set up throughout the park.

We look forward to returning again next year.

4th Annual Art @ the Locks Show

It was a very hot and and humid weekend with temperatures on Saturday reaching 84F (28.9C) and humidity making it feel like 98F (36.7C)and Sunday was even worse with heat 87F (30.6C) and humidity 100F (37.8C).

But we made the best of it and with where we were set up we were able to have some shade throughout the day.

On both days there was a fair amount of boat traffic going through Youngs Point Lock 27 which allows access to Clear Lake from Katchewanooka Lake.

To make it more inviting for people to come in to see the art show Cindy hung some of her paintings on the fence facing the lock.

It certainly made the people from the boats and those walking along the pathway aware of the art show.

Norma and I had our artwork hung in the tent to protect the watercolours and other paintings under glass from the direct rays of the sun.

It was nice to see many of the people we knew come out and visit us at the show.

A lot of interest was shown in our artwork and a couple of people approached us about our having an exhibition in their art gallery next year, which we will certainly look forward to doing.

We look forward to returning to this art show next year.

Third Annual Art @ the Locks Art Show

Over the weekend we exhibited our art at the 3rd Annual Art @ the Locks Show held at the Lockside Trading Company.

The first day it was the start of a very hot and humid weekend with the temperature climbing to 85F (29C) and the humidly making it feel like 100F (37.8C). We had the added bonus of severe thunderstorm warnings in place.

Fortunately, we did not get the storms they were calling for until very late in the evening and even then there was only a little thunder and not a lot of rain.

We had a fair number of people come out to visit the show today, with many who stopped in before they continued through Lock 27 which allows access from Katchewanooka Lake to Clear Lake on the Trent-Severn Waterway.

There was a lot of interest in a number of the paintings and Diane sold small items.

On the second day of the show it was even hotter and more humid than the day before with the temperature going up to 86F (30C) and the humidity making it feel like 106F (41.1C) and once again there were severe thunderstorm storm warnings in effect along with the possibility of a tornado.

Needless to say, there wasn't as much boat traffic or as many people out to visit the show as the day before.

Those who did come to see the show were very interested in some of the paintings and took flyers about some of the other shows we would be exhibiting at later in the year and a number of them planned on returning to the next Art @ the Locks Show being held on 15-16 August 2015. Once again Diane sold small items.

When we were about to take down the display the thunder clouds started rolling in and thunder began to rumble. Fortunately, the storm held off until everything was packed away and we made it home.

The four of us will return again in August and hopefully we will have cooler weather than we had this weekend.

Peterborough Garden Show

Today I went and helped with setting up the Peterborough Garden Show at the Evidrude Centre in Peterborough, Ontario.

This is the fourth year that KAGS has had a display at the Garden Show.

For this year each artist had their work exhibited for the most part on their own panel instead of spread throughout the panels.

It is a wonderful display and I hope you have the chance to come out and enjoy the show.

Small Treasures Art Show

The Countryside Art Group was well represented in the Small Treasures Art Show at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio with a total of nine paintings entered into this fund raiser for prizes for the Best of High School Art Show held at KAGS in May.

Fifty seven tickets were sold for the order of selection of each of the seventy seven original 8" x 10" paintings and the draw began at 2:00pm.

Mrs. Vera Penrose of Peterborough, Ontario had the first ticket drawn and she chose A Winter Sunset by Susan Sydney.

First Snow by Susan Sydney was selected by Mrs. Joanne Fernall of Norwood, Ontario.

For Mr. John Mathers of Toronto, Ontario his choice was Autumn Reflections I by Susan Sydney.

Mrs. Merridy Watt of Ennismore, Ontario selected for her first of two draw tickets Sunflowers by Diane Collins.

Mrs. Elaine Goselin selected Cottage Sunrise by Diane Collins.

Mrs. Merridy Watt of Ennismore, Ontario selected Furnace Falls for her second of two draw tickets

Norman MacEachern's painting Lighthouse was chosen by Mr. Henry Chu of Prince George, British Columbia.

And lastly, Mrs. Elaine Goselin of Peterborough, Ontario selected Hibiscus by Cindy Allan.

The show had a party atmosphere and everyone who attended the closing ceremonies of the draw for order of paintings selected had an enjoyable time even if their first choice of painting had already been selected.

The fund raiser was a success with over $1,700.00 being raised for prize money for the Best of High School Art Show.

We would like to thank all the people who selected our paintings to add to their art collections.

If anyone is interested in supporting the Best of High School Art Show Fund Raiser we still have seventeen paintings available for $30.00 each at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.

With Mothers' Day coming up next month they would make an ideal gift and for those who do their Christmas shopping early an original painting would be a wonderful present.
