6th Annual Purple Onion Festival

This year is a little cooler than last year, but once again it is a bright and sunny day for the 6th Annual Purple Onion Festival.

Its location in Millennium Park in Peterborough, Ontario right on the banks of the Otonabee River is peaceful and relaxing.

It didn't take long for us to set up our display in the space beside the Silver Bean Cafe which attracts a lot of people into the building; with many of them coming through the building after enjoying their coffee or a meal on the patio.

About an hour after the opening of the Festival the first performer which drew a good number of people to our area. We are able to watch the performances throughout the day, which is an added bonus.

At lunchtime we took turns going over to the Taste of The Kawarthas Tent to sample the delicious local food served by ten of the local chefs from some of the finest restaurants in the area.

After lunch a couple of us went out to the Water Street. entrance to Millennium Park to watch the Dance for the Climate where we had the opportunity to learn songs and a few dance moves.

During the last couple of hours of the Festival some of us went out to buy some of the locally grown produce, while others visited the Wellness Village to see the wellness practitioners and purchase a few of their specialty products.

At the end of the show it didn't take very long for everything to be torn down, packaged up and loaded into the vehicles and we were all on our way home after another successful show.

The Uncommon Marketplace

Since Cindy picked up my painting from the Black and White Plus One Colour exhibit at KAGS when the show closed, I agreed to take in her paintings for The Uncommon Marketplace yesterday, that way both of us weren't running down into the bottom end of Peterborough at the same time.

It worked out especially well, as Cindy and I took a trip into Cavan Monaghan Township and Millbrook on Wednesday to find places that we would like to paint for the upcoming 1st Annual Outdoor Painting Festival Cavan/Millbrook which is sponsored in part by Cavan Arts.

The Uncommon Marketplace show is being held at the Canadian Canoe Museum, 910 Monaghan Road, Peterborough, Ontario.

It is featured as "A Celebration of Arts and Crafts".

Throughout the course of this two day event there will be demonstrations of crocheting, drawing, fibre arts, knitting, paddle carving, painting in watercolour, painting on canvas in acrylic or oil, pottery, pyrography (wood burning), weaving, wood turning and much more.

The KAGS display features sixty two paintings from twenty three different artists in a wide variety of media and styles.

Both Cindy and I will be demonstrating upstairs on Sunday afternoon.

Cindy will be working on a couple of large canvases, while I will be painting in watercolour on smaller paintings so I can stop and talk with people about art and KAGS.

The hours for the show are:
17 Sep 16 from 10am-5pm
18 Sep 16 from 12pm-5pm
Admission is Free and there are a number of Free Draw Prizes.

We hope that some of you will be able to come out and enjoy the art show and the canoe exhibits at the Museum.

MacKelvie Gallery

Yesterday three of the Group hung their paintings in the MacKelvie Gallery at Lang Pioneer Village and Museum.

It seems that since I tend to put in smaller paintings my usual spot is on the wall just inside the entrance door to the Gallery.

Two were pen and ink sketches of draft horses and the third was a watercolour still life of an old enamel water pitcher and daisies.

The first wall on the right hand side of the Gallery before the first window was one of three paintings by Diane Collins.

This was a brightly coloured painting of a red flower.

On the same wall at the far end of the Gallery after the second window was the first of three paintings by Cindy Allan of an autumn forest featuring maple and birch trees.

To the left of the windowed wall and on the far back wall from the entrance were the remaining two paintings by Cindy.

They were of barns in winter, the top one of early winter just after harvest and the lower one of late winter just before the arrival of spring.

On the second of the windowed walls on the left was the remaining two of Diane's paintings. They were between the two windows and of the Village Church and a landscape of the area.

The exhibition runs from 01 September through to 06 October.

On 04 September the Village holds their 170th Anniversary Celebration of the Lang Grist Mill with free cake, an all day Harvest Corn Roast, live music throughout the day, horse and wagon rides, demonstrations by the Lang Pioneer Village Quilting Club, old fashioned children’s games and many more events.

The following month on 02 October is the Applefest, a colourful fall celebration of apples and the harvest season, with horse and wagon rides, live music and many more events.

If you have a chance come out and view the show and enjoy the harvest festivities.
